DetailsHistory in the Making: The Gasparilla Island Light Restoration On Saturday, April 8th, 2017 the Gasparilla Island Light will be open for the public to climb for the first time in history. The Port Boca Grande Lighthouse is also available to climb this one day a year as we celebrate Florida Lighthouse Day from 10 am to 4 pm. Due to the size of the Gasparilla Island Light, the climb is RSVP through the sign up link on at http://www.barrierislandparkssociety.org/. The landscaped grounds around the light will be open. The cost is $5 per person per light and restrictions apply. Join us for the fun, including free cake and lemonade, crafts for the kids, a hot dog lunch for $5, local authors, docents, and more. Many people assume the lighthouses are funded and managed through the government since they are located within the Gasparilla island State Park. However, they receive no federal or state funding and preservation and management is made possible solely through grants, donations and the proceeds from the gift shop at Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum. It has long been the ardent dream of the Barrier Island Parks Society, a Community Support Organization, CSO to restore what was known as the Boca Grande Rear Range Light -- now renamed Gaspariila Island Light. Many years of perseverance and the donations of countless generous contributors have made this dream a reality. The Barrier Island Parks Society, BIPS originated in 1989 when a group of concerned citizens began a journey to create a museum in the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and support four state parks: Gasparilla Island, Don Pedro Island (and land base) Cayo Costa and Stump Pass. The Barrier Island Parks Society also restored the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and added a museum with exhibits that focus on the social/cultural history of Boca Grande.
