Roger Ernest Knappe

November 25, 1927 - March 17, 2017

 

Roger Ernest Knappe, 89 of Rotonda West, FL passed away Friday March 17, 2017. Roger was born November 25, 1927 in Tarrytown, NY to Adolph Herman and Elizabeth (Schwarz) Knappe.

After graduating Wesleyan University, Roger went to work at Lederle Laboratories in Pearl River, NY. Roger received a commission in the United States Navy during the Korean War. After serving in the Pacific, he returned to his career as a pharmaceutical chemist working for American Cyanamid for over 40 years.

 

He and his wife Margaret (Peg) raised 5 sons in River Vale, NJ before retiring to Rotonda West in 1993. Known for his signature dry wit, love for dogs, and generosity to all, Roger was an avid sailor for most of his life. He spent summer evenings and weekends sailing with his family on the Hudson River near Tappan Zee and would cruise for several weeks each year from port to port along Long Island Sound.

 

He is survived by his sons Roger Eric (Marla) of Flemington, NJ, David of Weehawken, NJ, Mark (Laura) of Chesterfield VA, Bruce of Roanoke, VA and Douglas (Christopher) of North Port, FL. Grandchildren Eric, Anthony, Christopher, Grant, Garrett, Mary Grace and Sara. Sister Doris K McManus of Pleasanton,CA and many nieces and nephews.

 

Inurnment will take place on June 17 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY followed by a celebration of life.

 

Lemon Bay Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
