Nellie Rivera Ventura

"Nellie Rivera Ventura, 86, passed away today in Pembroke Pines, Florida after an extended illness. She was born on June 5, 1931 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Pablo Rivera and Juanita Carrasquillo Rivera, and was the beloved youngest of eight children, who continued to call her "Nena" or Baby, her entire life.

As a teenager, Nellie relocated with her family from Puerto Rico to Brooklyn. Even with Spanish as her first language, she attended public high school in English and was valedictorian of her graduating class. After high school she became a certified dietitian. She worked at Crown Heights Hospital, where and until she met and married the love of her life, Joseph D Ventura, who preceded her in death in 2008. Nellie and Joe moved to Florida in the 1950's. They resided in Miami until 1988 and spent their retirement years in Englewood, Florida.

Nellie was a devoted wife, wonderful mother and good friend; she set an example of kindness and loving generosity to everyone. Devout Roman Catholics, both Nellie and Joe were ordained in the Third Order of Mary, and were active parishioners of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Englewood.

She is survived by her sister, Virginia Rivera Nieves; her five children, Domenica, Jerome (Terese), Juanita, Joseph Jr, and Maria (Mike); her grandchildren, John, Daniel, Andrew, Joseph, Matthew, Leah, Christopher, Kayla and Matthew, and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Jacob, mourn her passing."

Visitation will be held today Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at Lemon Bay Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will follow at 10:00 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Englewood with burial to follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park.
