There will be an Englewood Genealogy Society of Florida workshop on ancestry software, “Family Tree Maker”, on Wednesday, January 22, 10:15am to 12:30pm at the Elsie Quirk Library, 100 W. Dearborn Street. D’Ann Still will present this informative talk in person and via Zoom. This workshop is free and open to the public. Registration is required for the Zoom option at egsfl.org.
Beyond the Usual Genealogy Sources
The Englewood Genealogical Society of Florida will feature speaker Bryan Mulcahy speaking on “Beyond the Usual Sources: Genealogy Research in Academic Libraries, Archives and Repositories” during the monthly general meeting on Wednesday, January 22, 1:30 to 4:45pm at the Elsie Quirk Library, 100 W. Dearborn Street. This talk will be presented live and via Zoom. The meeting is free and open to the public. To participate via Zoom, you must register in advance at egsfl.org.
Pork Loin Dinner
How does a pork loin dinner sound to you? If it sounds good, then plan to attend the Englewood Lions’ annual Pork Loin Dinner served 4 to 7pm on Saturday, January 25 at their clubhouse, 4611 Placida Road. On the menu is marinated pork loin, mashed potatoes, German sauerkraut, corn pudding, applesauce, apple crisp and a beverage. Advance tickets are $15 through Tuesday, January 21 and $16 at the door. Purchase tickets in advance by calling 941•698•7508 or from a Lions member as tickets at the door are limited.
Clay Shooting Tournament
It’s time to sign up for Lemon Bay Sunrise Rotary’s fourth annual Sporting Clay Tournament which will take place on Saturday, February 1st. The shoot will take place at Sarasota Trap, Skeet & Clays, 3445 Rustic Road, Venice. Registration/check-in is 11am to noon, a catered lunch is served from 11:30am to 12:30pm and the shoot is 1 to 3pm. Stay for the prizes, raffle & more after the shoot. Learn About SW Florida History
The Lemon Bay Garden Club will host Charlotte County Libraries & History’s County Historian Jennifer Zoebelein, PhD., during the Monday, February 3rd monthly meeting at the clubhouse, 480 Yale Street. She will speak about Charlotte County & Southwest Florida’s early history. On January 3rd, Lemon Bay Woman’s Club held their installation of new officers at the Boca Royale Golf and Country Club. Organized in 1918, the Lemon Bay Woman’s Club serves Englewood through events and partnerships as well as the preservation of their historic clubhouse at 51 N. Maple Street. The club meets Monday mornings to work on craft projects and visitors are welcome to stop in to see the building and chat with members. Lemon Bay Woman’s Club is holding a rummage sale on Friday & Saturday, February 21 & 22, 9am to 2pm at the clubhouse located at 51 N. Maple Street. Giant Rummage Sale
Save the date for the GFWC Rotonda West Woman’s Club Rummage Sale on Saturday, March 22 from 9am to 12:30pm at the Rotonda West Community Center, 646 Rotonda Circle, Rotonda West. Household items, clothing, craft items, jewelry, baked goods, sports, wall décor, Holiday Occasions, technology and accessories will be available. Proceeds will benefit GFWC RWWC Scholarships and Environmental Projects. The club welcomes new members and Rotonda residency is not required. If interested, email rwwcmembership@gmail.com.
Garden Club Awards Scholarships
Lemon Bay Garden Club recently announced two college scholarship awards for 2024-2025. Riley Bergmann of Parrish is attending University of Florida, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Gainesville. She is majoring in Plant Science with a minor in Environmental Horticulture, with a Spring 2025 anticipated graduation date.
Emily Van Guilder of Drummerston, VT is a senior at University of Colorado majoring in Environmental Design with concentration in Landscape Architecture. Emily, a prior scholarship recipient, graduates in Spring, 2025. Scholarships are awarded to sophomore, junior or senior students furthering their education in horticulture, conservation, landscape design or related fields. Sue took this photo of the flower bouquets at a vendor booth while visiting the Punta Gorda Farmers Market. She is a member of the Lemon Bay Garden Club.
