Just like so many things that we’ve all grown to love about Englewood, but have been cancelled due to COVID-19, this year’s Halloween Safewalk has been cancelled too. There is still too much concern for the safety and well-being of our residents, merchants and visitors.
The Old Englewood Village Association (OEVA) is here to help our local businesses prosper and engage this community that we call our home. So, looking for a different way to drive traffic to our local businesses, the board discussed options to safely allow our residents to enjoy Halloween, explore our community, and maybe discover areas and businesses that they didn’t realize existed.
Hoping to engage everyone in Englewood, OEVA came up with a home and business Halloween decorating contest. People are invited to decorate their homes and/or business and submit their creation for judging. The week of Halloween, the public will be invited to drive by the participating homes and businesses, view the spectacular Halloween decorations, then vote safely via their mobile device of choice, for their favorites!
The winners (the highest vote getters) of the Home Decorating category will be awarded gift certificates to local businesses in the amount of $250 for first place, $100 for second place, and $50 for each of the next 10 runners up. The top three businesses will receive plaques that they can proudly hang in their business and show off their status as one of the best decorated businesses. The gift certificates were purchased by OEVA directly from our member businesses. And we hope that our visitors will stop by and visit our local merchants.
Entry is free. Go to OEVA’s new website https://Englewood FL.org, click on the Halloween Decorating Contest banner and then filling out the form and submitting a photo. Deadline for entry is midnight, October 24, 2020.
Voting will also be done through OEVA’s new website: https://EnglewoodFL.org. Visit the website prior to voting and then click on “Add to Home Screen” on their smartphone. The site will turn into an app. From there you can get a map which directs you to the entries. Once you’ve visited all of the entries you can then vote via the app. Voting is free and takes place from October 26 through 8am October 31. Each device may vote only once for their three favorite homes and three favorite businesses.
The Rules are: that you are the primary resident or are business owner of the property being submitted. All information is required including a photo of your decorated property. Deadline for entry is midnight on Saturday October 24. Decorations must be Halloween themed. Political themes or signs will be disqualified. All entries must remain decorated through October 31, and all entries must be within the 34223, 34224, 33946 and 33947 zip codes.
The Old Englewood Village Association reserves the right to reject entries with missing, incorrect, misleading, or disqualifying information; missing photo, or inappropriate themes.
So, when your home or business is decorated, take a photo and submit your entry. You can keep on decorating even after you submit.
On another note, there are still other happenings on Dearborn. We’ve got two Farmer’s Markets! On Thursdays, we have the Englewood Farmers Market, which is designed to promote local Florida growers and agriculturally related products with a focus on our four core values of nutritional health, education, sustainability, and sense of community. Right nearby we have the Dearborn Market where you can find a wide array of organic produce, artisan cheeses, pies and more. Both Thursday events run from 9am to 2pm. The Sunday Farmers Market runs every Sunday from 10am to 3pm, brings in not just wonderful produce, but arts, crafts, and live music.
Enjoy Englewood and enjoy Old Englewood Village!
