GPS/NAVIGATION for MARINERS presented by US Coast Guard Auxiliary-Cape Haze Flotilla 99

GPS/NAVIGATION for MARINERS by US Coast Guard Auxiliary-Cape Haze Flotilla 99
Date & Time: on Sat, January 18, 2020 - 9am to 5pm
Place: At Cape Haze Community Center, 180 Spyglass Alley, Placida, FL 33946
Description: Would you be able to state your exact position on the water in case of an emergency? Can you locate places you want to go to on the water and navigate there in the best and safest manner possible? Can you identify water depth and any obstacles or obstructions on the way there? To learn and enhance these skills, this is the class for you.
The first part of this course is dedicated to learning and reviewing basic navigation skills. This part is designed to help the student understand how to use nautical charts and navigation skills to:
      -Determine your location
      -Determine depths
-Locate and identify Aids to Navigation (ATONs) day or night
-Locate and identify obstacles and other features helpful in navigation
-Locate destinations and determine compass bearings, distance and calculate time to navigate to your destination.
The second part of the course is dedicated to learning how to apply modern Global Positioning Systems (GPS) equipment to determine your location, and as an aid to navigate to and from desired destinations. The student will learn the concept of using and storing waypoints, routes and tracks in GPS equipment as a valuable tool to assist navigation for trip planning and execution.
This course is taught by US Coast Guard Auxiliary members who regularly patrol Charlotte Harbor, Gasparilla Sound, Pine Island Sound, South Gulf Cove and surrounding areas, using various GPS equipment.
Note: Since there many types and brands of GPS equipment, the course will not be able to be equipment type and brand specific, but the knowledge and skills learned should be a valuable aid in helping the student apply what is learned to implementation on their own specific equipment.
Cost is $60 per person which includes the 168 page workbook for the class which you will have also for future reference. To reserve your space, or with any questions, contact Larry Piper, email: Ldpiper1948@gmail.com or phone 717-752-0081 (voice or text). Space is limited for this class so reserve your place in the class early.
