Local wins Royal Palm Literary Award

Congratulations to Eileen Vorbach Collins, who recently won a Royal Palm Literary Award from the Florida Writers Association during their conference in Orlando. Her entry, “Hold on Till the Sun Goes Down”, was selected for the Gold Award for an Unpublished Anthology and also earned first runner up for Unpublished Book of the Year. Eileen hopes her book, a collection of narrative essays on the death of a child by suicide, might prove helpful for others. These vignettes, by their nature short, could be easier for a grieving person to absorb. The collection will be published as “Love in the Archives” by Apprentice House, Loyola University, in 2023. Eileen, who is a resident of Rotonda West, is from Baltimore and worked as an RN. She also holds a master’s degree in pastoral care from Loyola College, where her master’s thesis focused on bereavement by suicide and included developing a bereavement support group. She has been writing for some time and has seen over 20 of her essays published in various journals. Besides being a member of the Florida Writers Association, she is a member of the local group, the Suncoast Writers Guild. These groups are for new, emerging, and established writers.
