"Josh The Otter" Teaches Water Safety

On April 30, Englewood Elementary School first graders had a fun and educational field trip to learn about water safety awareness with the help of "Josh the Otter." The kids enjoyed a great lunch and then gathered around to hear Rotarian Carol Peterson read the “Josh the Otter” story. In this story, young Josh learns the important lesson of staying away from the water unless accompanied by an adult. Learning to roll over and to float on their back is the first step in learning to swim. The children had a visit from Josh the Otter himself and received a goodie bag containing crayons and a coloring book highlighting the important lessons learned during the program. The story of Josh the Otter was written after the unfortunate drowning of Joshua Collingsworth, who slipped away during a family gathering and found a short time afterwards in the family pool. The Rotary Club of Englewood plans to sponsor two teachers to become certified to teach water safety at the Englewood YMCA for school children next fall. Earlier during the school year Vineland Elementary and Myakka River Elementary were also presented with the program. Learn more about the Josh the Otter Water Safety Awareness program at www.joshtheotter.org.
