4/5/2021 1:57:00 PM Turtle Sculpture Named "Speckles"
The new environmental sculpture at Venice Beach now has the official name of “Speckles,” thanks to contest winner Val Kappelman, a 12-year-old Englewood SKY Academy middle school student. The name was selected as the winner for the “Name the Turtle” contest out of more than 250 entries submitted by youth from Englewood and Venice. The contest was sponsored by the Gulf Coast Community Foundation. The nine-by-nine-foot aluminum sea turtle sculpture is located at the north side of the beach pavilion. Speckles’ function is to present a message of environmental awareness and recycling, and beachgoers are encouraged to deposit their plastic bottles to fill up the sculpture, rather than littering the beach or dumping in the trash for the landfill.
