Englewood Elementary School teacher Rachel Baker and her third, fourth and fifth grade science students participated in an educational class program to educate youth about the risks to threatened beach-nesting birds, such as the least tern. They created colorful artwork signs warning of human disturbance in a sign contest, with ten winners whose signs will posted on metal near the roped-off areas on the beach for least tern nesting. The signs were from the nesting shorebird’s point of view. The winners’ signs, as well as 35 additional youth signs, will be hung at the Elsie Quirk Library, 100 W. Dearborn Street, and the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum to educate the community. Mary Lundenberg, an advocate for protecting beach-nesting birds such as the least tern, received the North American Nature Photography Association 2020 Philip Hyde Conservation Grant. She chose to use that money to develop and distribute learning materials, including her informational storybook, A Tale of a Tern, to 11 Sarasota County Schools. Materials are geared toward fifth-grade students and their families, as well as boaters, beach visitors, and policymakers. Share the Shore Sign Contest Winners are: Andre Gorobston - Please help our young; watch your step. Falcan Mateja – Use the trash can, not our sand. Gavin Defilippis - We can share the beach. Andrew Dame - Dogs scare me. Keep them home please. Madi Groff - Shhh…We nest her. Be careful and leave dog at home. Lana Couture - Please leave us alone and leave your dogs at home. Kenzie Baggett - Please watch where you are walking. Lucille Vega - Watch Your Step. Katerina Mazzo: This is my home. Olivia Morris - Your foot or their life? If you would like to obtain a free copy of Mary’s book, A Tale of a Tern, it is available for free on her website, marylundeberg.com/ataleofatern.pdf, or free on her YouTube channel (book is read by Mary): youtu.be/9honNEl6n6Q.
