Cherished husband, father and brother Melvin "Mel" Rocheleau passed away Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017. His loving wife Ann and adoring daughter Jo were at his side at the time of his passing.
Mel was born June 1, 1933 in Cheboygan, Michigan. He graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1951 and attended Ferris State University, both in Michigan. He married Ann LaPorte in 1958, and they spent several months in Germany while he was in the U.S. Army.
Mel was employee for several years at the Michigan Oil & Gas News in Mt. Pleasant, Mich., and spent over 25 years at Michigan Consolidated Gas. He retired in 1997, spending 20 years hopping back-and-forth between Michigan - including Traverse City and Black Lake - and Rotonda West, Fla. Mel was a former grand knight at Knight of Columbus council 1297. He enjoyed traveling and had won awards for speed skating. While he wasn't exactly shy, Mel preferred listening and asking questions to talking at long lengths. Self-reliance was a consistent theme in his life, as he worked frequently to provide for his family. Even as he got older, Mel could often be seen doing housework himself, as keeping active was important to him. He had a distinct laugh and a dry sense of humor.
Mel is survived by Ann, his wife of nearly 60 years; children Chris (Janet) Rocheleau, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; Jo Rocheleau, Suttons Bay, Mich.; Mike Rocheleau (Camille Garber), Traverse City, Mich.; Paul (Sue) Rocheleau, Mt. Pleasant, Mich.; brothers Ken (Bernice) Rocheleau, Charlevoix, Mich. and Harvey (Dee) Rocheleau, Cheboygan, Mich.; grandsons Kelly Rocheleau, Auburn, N.Y. and Andy Rocheleau, Mt. Pleasant, Mich. and several nieces and nephews.
Mel's service will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at the Lemon Bay Funeral Home, 2 Buchans Landing, Englewood, Fla. A gathering will be held from 1-2 p.m., with a memorial at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Manitou Islands Memorial Society, P.O. Box 177, Empire, Mich. 49630
