Local Author Wins Award

Englewood author, Harry T. Barnes, was named a winner in Royal Palm Literary Awards Competition 2024. Hosted annually by the Florida Writers Association (FWA), RPLA is a highly regarded writing competition for FWA members that celebrates excellence in writing across more than 20 genre categories for adults and five for youth. The Royal Palm Literary Awards offer a platform for writers to showcase their literary works and gain valuable recognition. Harry T. Barnes’ work, “Dark Days on Bear Creek, 1929-1939, the Depression Years”, was an entry in the Historical Fiction category and is a real-life story about the author’s Appalachian grandparents and their five coming-of-age children during the Great Depression. Mr. Barnes shared his thoughts on being named a winner, stating, “A big thank you to the Suncoast Writers Guild in Englewood whose members, workshops, and programs helped me hone my writing skills.” He is a former president of the Suncoast Writers Guild and his other works include “Over the Barnes Bridge”, “Condo Capers” and short stories & poems published in anthologies and periodicals.
