North Port Fire Rescue announced Thursday the line-of-duty death of Firefighter Victor Cleveland, who died December 11 after what officials described as a long and courageous battle with cancer. He had been serving with the department for 17 years.

Cleveland began his career as a volunteer with the Nokomis Volunteer Fire Department and later served nearly four years with the Florida Forest Service before joining North Port Fire Rescue. Officials said he was widely respected for his professionalism, dedication, and commitment to protecting the public.

“His contributions on and off the emergency scene reflect a legacy of honor and perseverance,” the department said in a statement. “Through the exercise of his duties, he ultimately made the supreme sacrifice as a result of occupational exposures inherent to the firefighting profession.”

Cleveland is survived by his wife, Amy; his children, Delaney and Alton; and his granddaughter, Felicity. The department said his family “will always remain a part of our fire family” and that it will continue to support them as arrangements move forward.

Details about memorial services will be released once plans are finalized, officials said.

Merchant openings are expected in spring and summer 2026. The second phase of downtown also includes plans for a boutique hotel, new luxury apartments and a dog park. The newest retail phase is fully leased.

La Maison, an authentic French patisserie, will offer breads, pastries and croissants. Agave Bandido, a Mexican-inspired restaurant and tequila bar, will feature artistic murals and contemporary cuisine. Grain & Berry, known for superfood bowls, toasts and smoothies, will round out the dining lineup.

Retail and Lifestyle
Seaside & Co. will combine coastal-inspired clothing, home décor and a wine bar and lounge. Hudson Square Boutique, founded by Wellen Park resident Danielle MacConel, will feature women’s resort wear and accessories.
Professional Offices
AvSKY, a private aviation brokerage, will join several new professional tenants, including Allstate Fisher Family Insurance, J&B Insurance Partners and Mattamy Homes’ Southwest Florida Division headquarters.

Phase II of Downtown Wellen includes two mixed-use, two-story buildings totaling 44,000 square feet, designed by Trapolin-Peer Architects of New Orleans. The ground floors will house restaurants and retail, with professional offices above.

The Wellmar Hotel, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio property, will also join downtown. The hotel will feature more than 120 rooms and a full-service rooftop bar. Future additions include new luxury apartments and a 2-acre fenced dog park with agility equipment, open space and shaded seating areas.

The Englewood Fire District is raising awareness about the fire risks associated with lithium-ion batteries commonly found in e-bikes, scooters, and large power tools. In a public safety announcement posted on October 10, the district urged residents to take specific precautions to prevent fires. As part of its “Charge Into Fire Safety” campaign for Fire Prevention Week, the department shared crucial advice to help keep the community safe from potential battery-related hazards, highlighting a growing concern for local households.

Officials advise charging these devices outdoors on a flat, dry surface away from direct sunlight, moisture, children, and tripping hazards. They also recommend ensuring the e-bike or scooter is secure and will not fall over while charging. These simple but effective measures can significantly reduce the risk of a battery fire. For more fire safety tips, residents are encouraged to follow the Englewood Fire District’s Facebook page for ongoing updates and community announcements.

Englewood’s Vineland Elementary students are actively engaged in real-world science and robotics. Recently, Mr. Rodriguez’s STEM classes were bustling with innovation. Kindergarteners built foundational skills using Plus-Plus blocks to practice letters and strengthen fine motor development, while other classes explored the science behind night and day, tracing moving shadows to understand the Sun’s position.

These hands-on activities highlight the school’s commitment to engaging STEM education, fostering curiosity and scientific thinking among Englewood’s youngest learners across all grade levels. The STEM lab provides valuable experiences for the community’s future scientists. For more insights into Vineland Elementary’s educational programs, follow their Facebook page.

The Friends of the Sarasota County History Center will host Friends Fest 2025 on October 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sarasota Farm Bureau, 7289 Palmer Boulevard, to launch Long Timers of Sarasota County, a new group for residents who have lived in the county for 30 years or more.

Kim Manning, president of the Friends of the Sarasota County History Center, said the event will revive the old-time picnics that were once popular in the area. “To help get this underway there will be a festival and picnic on October 26 from 11am to 3pm on the beautiful grounds of the Sarasota Farm Bureau,” Manning said. “There will be food trucks, live oldies music by Paisley Craze, booths, historical organizations, storytelling, trivia contests, old time lawn games, circus history by Chucko the Clown and a few surprises.”

A special tribute will be held for the pioneer Carlton family. The event is open to the public, with admission set at $20 and $10 for members. New members of the Friends organization may attend for free.

Attendees can bring their own picnics and blankets or enjoy offerings from food trucks. Tables, chairs and tents are available to rent in advance. Registration and additional details are available at foschc.org

Sponsors of the event include Frank and Beth Cassell, Diane Esthus, David Harper, Andrew Littauer, All Event Rental and HPK Provident Advisors. Those interested in becoming sponsors may email friendsfest2025@gmail.com

All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Sarasota County History Center, a nonprofit that supports the Sarasota County History Center through fundraising for lectures, exhibits and acquisitions.

The Sarasota County History Center, part of the Sarasota County Public Library System, collects, preserves and shares the county’s historical records, artifacts and reference materials while identifying and protecting historic structures and archaeological sites.
