Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium and Crane Point Museum & Nature Center marked a milestone on October 6, 2025, with the opening of Mote’s 10th location: the Mote Mangrove to Reef Exhibit inside Crane Point’s newly renovated museum.

The exhibit, the first of two planned phases, immerses visitors in the interconnected ecosystems of the Florida Keys, including mangroves, seagrass beds, and coral reefs. Through interactive displays and storytelling, guests can explore Mote’s marine research and education efforts in the heart of Marathon.

“This opening represents an exciting new chapter for Mote Marine Laboratory as we establish our 6th location in the Keys in Marathon and continue building on our longstanding impact in the Florida Keys that we first established in 1993 with our former lab at Pigeon Key,” said Dr. Michael P. Crosby, president and CEO of Mote Marine Laboratory. “By partnering with Crane Point, we are expanding access to science-based education and inspiring people of all ages to understand and protect our precious marine ecosystems.”

Charlotte Quinn, CEO of Crane Point Museum & Nature Center, said the collaboration strengthens the museum’s mission. “This exhibit is a wonderful addition to Crane Point,” Quinn said. “We are proud to collaborate with Mote in making marine science accessible and relevant to the communities and visitors of Marathon.”

The Monroe County Tourist Development Council supported the project. The partnership between Mote and Crane Point is guided by a Memorandum of Understanding with the Florida Keys Land and Sea Trust, which manages Crane Point. The agreement ensures continued cooperation in education, outreach, and conservation of the region’s ecosystems.

Crane Point is at 5550 Overseas Highway in Marathon. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. More information is available at mote.org/location/marathon-crane-point.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, in partnership with Wildlife Forever, has announced the opening of the 2025-26 Florida Fish Art Contest.

The annual program invites students in grades kindergarten through 12 to connect with nature and learn about Florida’s native fish and aquatic habitats while exploring creative art and writing. Florida is among several participating states in the national Fish Art Contest, which has inspired more than 85,000 students worldwide to become the next generation of outdoor stewards.

A first-place winner and runner-up will be selected in each grade bracket — kindergarten through third grade, fourth through sixth grade, seventh through ninth grade, and 10th through 12th grade. Each bracket will have two categories: best illustration of a freshwater fish species and best illustration of a saltwater fish species.

How to Participate:

Select a Florida native fish species from the official list and research its habitat, behavior and conservation needs.

Create an original, handmade artwork of the chosen fish using any physical medium. Digital artwork is not allowed.

Write a one-page creative essay reflecting what you learned about your chosen species (required for fourth grade and above).

Submit entries online through the Fish Art Contest entry form page.

First-place winners and runners-up will receive prizes and recognition from the commission. Details about prizes are available on the website. The contest is open for submissions until February 28, 2026.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, volunteers at Lemon Creek Wildflower Preserve have been hard at work restoring the butterfly habitat, which suffered significant damage from storm surge and increased soil salinity. Ann Weaver and Maura Qualls noticed that key butterfly nectar and host plants like Porterweed and Scarlet Salvia had not returned. With support from the Lemon Bay Conservancy and native plant groups, they began testing transplant success with Wild Petunia, Black-eyed Susans, and more. Their efforts led to the planting of 160 native plants this spring. Rain finally arrived in late May, aiding the newly planted flowers and herbs. Butterfly species including Monarchs and Giant Swallowtails have already returned to the area. Visitors are welcome, and volunteers are typically on-site Thursdays from 8 to 9:30am. Tours will resume this fall.

SARASOTA COUNTY – Learn how to cut your energy and water use at home and empower others to do the same by training to be an “Energy Coach” with Sarasota County.

Registration is now open for a free, 3-hour introductory Energy Coach workshop set for August 09. Participants will receive professional instruction on and hands-on training in energy- and water-efficiency strategies, device installation, financial incentives for home upgrades, and public outreach. Training takes place at the UF/IFAS Extension Sarasota County: Twin Lakes Park, Green Building 6700 Clark Road Sarasota, FL 34241

“Community-centered support for reducing energy and water bills makes a real difference for Sarasota County households already working hard for safety and stability,” said Casey McCabe, energy program specialist with Sarasota County UF/IFAS Extension and Sustainability. “Our focus on weatherization and efficiency is especially relevant as we experience increased extreme heat and storm activity in our area.”

Nearly half of Sarasota County households are cost-burdened, meaning residents pay more than 30% of their annual income on housing costs. Utility and water bills are a large contributor to this disparity, with some low-to-median-income households in our region paying up to 19% of their annual income on energy costs.

From 2020 through 2024, the Energy Upgrade team has reached nearly 7,000 people with energy-efficiency education and upgraded 310 households. They’ve helped residents save more than $182,000 in utility costs and upward of 4 million gallons of water annually.

The Energy Coach training will run from 9 a.m. to noon, followed by a light lunch. Training will cover energy- and water-conservation techniques, energy equity, local utility bill payment assistance, efficiency-related financial incentives, and more.
