Generation Englewood, a new apartment community, is coming soon to East Englewood in South Sarasota County.

Kaplan Residential, a firm known for multifamily and build-to-rent developments across the Southeast, picked up nearly 20 acres at 201 Pine St., right at the corner of Crestwood Road and Pine Street, for $5.3 million. The previous owners, Jay and Premala Raja, bought the land back in 1999 for $1.1 million.

Construction started in 2024, and once finished, Generation Englewood will feature 306 rental units spread across five three-story buildings, covering more than 308,000 square feet. The design comes from CID Design Group. Some apartments will overlook a 3.5-acre man-made pond, ringed by a walking path, benches, and the community’s buildings.

Kaplan plans to offer a mix of 129 one-bedroom units (between 765 and 840 square feet), 142 two-bedroom units (1,038 to 1,180 square feet), and 30 three-bedroom units (at 1,390 square feet). Rents run from $2,000 up to $3,500 per month. The community will include a 10,000-square-foot clubhouse, a pool, a dog park, and an outdoor gathering space fitted with TVs, lounge seating, and a bar. Architecture Alliance, the landscape architect, is adding walking trails, benches, and grilling stations throughout the property.

Kaplan Residential operates out of Bay Harbor Islands, Florida. Nathan Kaplan, the company’s partner and managing director, knows the region well—his mother lives in Lakewood Ranch. This is Kaplan’s second Sarasota County project; their first, Generation Venice, sits across from Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Venice and features 239 luxury townhome rentals.

Kaplan chose this spot in Englewood for a reason: there’s a clear shortage of apartments in the area, even as the market keeps growing. The location sits about half a mile from the West Dearborn Street commercial district and close to Wellen Park, where you’ll find high-end shops and the Atlanta Braves’ spring training facility.

Downtown Englewood has seen major upgrades lately, with new infrastructure and more projects on the way. Kaplan expects to deliver Generation Englewood in early 2026.

Florida’s bracing for a real cold snap this weekend, and, believe it or not, there’s a small shot at snow flurries along the Gulf Coast.

As of Thursday, January 29, 2026, meteorologists are watching a setup that doesn’t come around often. Arctic air is pouring south and meeting the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, prime ingredients for “Gulf-effect” snow, which works a lot like lake-effect snow up north.

Tampa Bay, the Nature Coast, areas up toward the Big Bend and even Southwest Florida could see flakes, especially late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. Some weather models even hint at a chance for Northeast Florida. Still, nobody’s expecting a winter wonderland. If snow falls, it’ll be a brief show—think flurries or a dusting on the grass or your car, nothing more. Accumulation? Not likely.

Palm trees and snow? It could happen

What you will notice is the cold. Temperatures will drop into the low-to-mid 30s, with winds gusting 45 to 50 mph along the coast. That’s enough to make theme parks shut their water attractions from Saturday through Monday.

Meteorologists predict some parts of Florida might get up to a 20% shot at winter weather. Could there be flurries late Saturday? There’s a chance. Most places are closer to a 5-10% chance, but in Florida, even a whisper of snow is headline news.

It’s already been a cold week in Florida. Lows have dipped into the upper 20s and low 30s, and after a brief break, it gets colder Sunday and Monday. In Orlando, Sunday morning could see lows between 26 and 29 degrees, the coldest in 16 years. Ocala and The Villages will feel even worse, with wind chills in the teens.

What causes Gulf-effect snow? When cold, dry Arctic air sweeps over the warm Gulf waters, it picks up heat and moisture. That air rises and forms clouds, which sometimes squeeze out flurries as they reach land. It’s the same process as lake-effect snow, just with a southern twist.

If you’re along the Gulf Coast (especially around Tampa), you’ve got the best odds of seeing something unusual this weekend: a few snowflakes drifting through the Florida air.

Sarasota County has moved forward with a series of capital improvement projects to address damage to Manasota Key Road caused by recent hurricanes, including the construction of a temporary access road and a long-term redesign focused on erosion control and storm resilience.

County officials said a temporary access road is currently under construction to restore limited access to the area. The project will provide a critical connection while plans for a permanent reconstruction are developed.

The more extensive permanent redesign is anticipated to take at least four years and aims to address chronic erosion and storm vulnerability that have plagued the area. Sarasota County is coordinating with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and exploring additional funding sources to support the long-term effort.

Environmental considerations are also playing a role in project timing. Officials confirmed that sea turtles have laid nests along the impacted stretch of beach, and no construction on the permanent redesign will begin until 60 days after the last turtle nest has been documented. Based on current nesting patterns, work could begin in October.

”This area is environmentally sensitive and heavily used by wildlife, especially during turtle nesting season,” the county stated. ”We are committed to protecting these resources while restoring safe public access.”

Damage to Manasota Key Road has impacted residents and visitors alike, forcing detours and restricting access to popular locations such as Blind Pass Beach. The temporary road is intended to ease those disruptions while long-term solutions are implemented.

In June, Sarasota County issued a solicitation for engineering design services for the permanent rebuild, with deadlines for questions and submissions in July. While no firm start date has been announced for construction, the design phase marks a significant step forward. For ongoing updates, residents are encouraged to visit Sarasota County’s Capital Projects website. Specific questions can be directed to the county by calling 311.
