The Sarasota County Commission just made a big move. They unanimously agreed to add the historic Hawkins Ranch, about 3,300 acres, to the county’s Environmentally Sensitive Lands Protection Program (ESLPP). This isn’t just paperwork. With this decision, the centuries-old Nokomis cattle ranch is safe from urban developers for good, and a vital buffer zone will stay wild.

Why does this matter? Stopping urban sprawl, for starters. This ranch holds the line on the last piece of untouched land between Myakka River State Park and the county’s growing eastern midsection. The protection helps keep the Myakka River Watershed clean, too, because less sprawl means less runoff.

The site isn’t just any patch of land, as it’s a slice of “Old Florida.” This ranch has been in operation since the late 1800s, and preserving it keeps that legacy alive. The land serves as a critical habitat for wildlife. Protecting Hawkins Ranch expands the county’s web of wild spaces that bald eagles, Florida scrub-jays, river otters, and other threatened animals rely on.

The commission’s decision doesn’t just save a ranch. It keeps history, water, and wildlife intact for years to come.
