And this isn’t rare hype: the CDC says about one in five people infected doesn’t survive. Doctors are sounding the alarm, especially for anyone with open wounds or health conditions. Going for a swim? Double-check for cuts, burns, or surgical wounds first. Warm coastal water and raw shellfish create easy ways for the bacteria to get in.

Early detection saves lives. Catching the infection soon enough gives treatment a much better chance. The bigger problem? These cases aren’t just random. Climate change keeps pushing Gulf temperatures higher, which is helping the bacteria move further north every year.

People with diabetes, liver problems, or weakened immune systems are those at highest risk, and they need to be extra careful. If you fall into one of those groups, and especially if you have any broken skin, skip a swim in the Gulf for now. It’s tempting in this heat, but a quick dip isn’t worth the risk of a life-threatening infection.
