The Lee County Sheriff’s office broke the news, sharing that Dundee, a dual-certified patrol and narcotics dog, joined their team just a few months ago, in February 2024. In that short time, he took part in 174 operations and helped handle 28 apprehensions.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno announced that 4-year-old German Shepherd K9 Dundee passed away in the line of duty on September 28, 2026, after suffering an apparent medical emergency during a suspect apprehension. Marceno shared his grief over the loss, stating, “Heartbroken is an understatement.” 

Dundee didn’t back down from tough assignments. The department described him as fearless, always charging into dangerous situations right alongside the deputies he served with. Now, the team is asking the community to support Dundee’s handler, Deputy Chala, and keep him and his family in their thoughts.

Some details are still unclear. The sheriff’s office hasn’t revealed the suspect’s identity or disclosed if anyone else was injured during the incident. The exact circumstances of Dundee’s death remain a mystery.

What’s clear is the impact Dundee made on his department and the people of Lee County. Officials promised to honor his courage and service.
