Punta Gorda Airport keeps getting busier, and this week marks a big step forward with six new departure gates now open inside the Bailey Terminal.

They didn’t stop there. Altogether, the $44 million expansion includes more seating, extra waiting space, charging stations, and those big windows that let you watch the planes roll in from up close. Now, aircraft park right by the gates, which airport staff say should make boarding quicker.

Families around Southwest Florida often pick Punta Gorda for its hassle-free travel. Airport officials want to keep it that way. Even as the crowds grow, they promise not to lose that easy, convenient feel.

It’s no wonder the airport’s growing. Last year, over 2.2 million passengers passed through, which was more than an 18% jump from the year before. Gates seven through twelve are just one part of a much larger plan. The terminal now features bigger restrooms, family restrooms, a mother’s room, and an adult changing station to serve everyone a little better.

The Bailey Terminal Courtesy flypgd.com

And there’s more on the way. When the full project wraps up, travelers will see more food spots and shopping choices: a Wolfgang Puck, expanded restaurants and newsstands, and even a Dunkin’ Donuts behind security.

Getting to this point took years of planning. Airport leaders started thinking about renovations as they watched passenger numbers climb. The construction adds over 50,000 square feet with new gates, concessions, and other improvements, all while keeping the airport running.

Yet, the work isn’t done. More gates, a new TSA checkpoint, and permanent food and drink options are coming in later phases. They will finish the entire terminal expansion by late 2027. So, for now, Punta Gorda keeps growing, but promises not to lose its friendly, no-fuss charm.
