SUMMARY:Florida's Role in the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Florida’s Role in the American Revolution \nMost residents know little of the state’s role during the American Revolution. Public Historian Jacob Winge will fill in the gaps. Florida was a staunchly Loyalist stronghold that served as a critical strategic “backdoor” for Great Britain. Come and learn about the invasion of east Florida\, the famous Battle of Thomas Creek and more\, Monday\, February 23\, 10-11:30 at the Manasota Beach Club (MBC)\, 7660 Manasota Key Road. \nWinge is a historian with deep personal ties to Florida who has spent almost two decades sharing Florida’s history\, stories\, and people through Living History programs\, Historical reenactments\, and school and community programs. His family has lived in the state since the 1870s. Jacob has a long history of civic engagement. He is a member of the Brigade of the American Revolution and the Southern Conference on British Studies\, a former Board President of the Friends of the Collier County Museums. He lives in East Naples with his wife Alexandria and daughter Wren. \nHis talk is part of the 37th Annual Monday Lecture Series hosted on the historic 15-acre MBC property — listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, the series continues the club’s long tradition of community education and stewardship. For additional information call 941-474-2614 or visit https://www.manasotabeachclub.com/2026-mbc-lecture-series \nToday’s Lecture: \nNatalie Smith\, Volunteer Coordinator\, Friends of Lemon Bay Park\, and colleagues\, will report on hurricane recover efforts and future plans. The Friend’s group is composed of up of 27 active members\, most of them retired professionals. The volunteer group has contributed thousands of hours to trail maintenance\, invasive species removal and hurricane recovery. The group works on habitat restoration\, public outreach and community involvement. Their work following five major storms\, including removing more than 50\,000 pounds of debris\, helped protect sensitive habitats and preserve one of the county’s longest stretches of mangrove shoreline. All events support the Manasota Beach Club hurricane restoration of this historic site.
