37th Annual MBC Monday Lecture Series to Spotlight Gulf Coast Ecology and History

ENGLEWOOD — The Manasota Beach Club will launch its 37th Annual Monday Lecture Series in January, offering a slate of presentations focused on Gulf Coast ecology, storm recovery, history and cultural heritage.

The series begins on January 5 with John McCarthy of Selby Gardens, who will speak on the history of Englewood. On January 12, tree canopy scientist and author Dr. Meg Loman will discuss her new book on the life of trees. Archaeologist Dr. Michelle Calhoun follows on January 19 with a look at the lightning whelk’s role in Florida history. On January 26, Megan Sorby will outline the Pine Island Redfish project, an aquaculture effort aimed at restoring the species.

Friends of Lemon Bay Park will present on February 2 about ongoing hurricane recovery. Folk music duo Aubrey Atwater and Elwood Donnelly will highlight Early Florida Folk Music on February 16. On February 23, historian Jacob Winge will explain Florida’s role in the American Revolution.

Mote Marine Laboratory’s Jason Robertshaw will address red tide on March 2, and Dr. Maranda Kles will review archaeological findings from the North Port area on March 16. The series concludes March 23 with MBC owner Sydney “Buff” Crampton, who will outline the effects of recent hurricanes on Manasota Key and Club recovery plans.

The Buffum family has operated the 15 acre Manasota Beach Club for 66 years. The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been involved in public service through environmental and historic preservation work. Crampton said the lecture series has long focused on ecological and historical themes and continues that mission with this year’s lineup.

The lectures take place from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at 7660 Manasota Key Road. Admission is 30 dollars, or 25 dollars for members, and includes light refreshments. Space is limited and reservations are required. For more information, call 941 474 2614 or visit the series webpage.
