Would Your Teen Know What to Do in a Mental Health Crisis? Free Training Empowers Students to Help Peers

With youth mental health concerns rising nationwide, a free Mental Health First Aid training is being offered to help high school students learn how to recognize and respond when a peer is in crisis. The program, designed to provide lifesaving knowledge similar to CPR, will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Forum Theatre at Grand Living Wellen Park, 19985 Market Way, Venice.

The initiative comes as data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that more than 40% of U.S. high school students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness in 2023, with nearly one in five seriously considering suicide. Organizers say early intervention and peer-to-peer support can play a critical role in saving lives.

The YMCA of Southwest Florida is aiming to train 60 students in grades 9 through 12. Participants will learn how to recognize signs of mental health and substance use challenges, safely interact with someone in crisis, and connect peers to professional help. The course also covers trauma, substance use and self-care strategies to encourage resilience.

The training is free and includes a boxed lunch. Reservations are required, and students can register by calling 844-630-5295 or visiting HCAFloridaHealthcare.com.

The event is hosted by the YMCA of Southwest Florida and sponsored by HCA Florida Healthcare, Paradise Exclusive Real Estate and the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida. Organizers emphasize that equipping young people with the confidence and tools to respond to mental health concerns helps create a more compassionate and supportive community.
