A Community Salute for Sgt. Joseph J. Luce

Sgt. Joseph J. Luce and his wife live in Rotonda West, where a powerful and emotional show of respect recently unfolded. A large group of local veterans gathered to honor the 9- year-old husband and father, soon to turn 91 on January 15, in recognition of his military service and enduring strength.

Luce served in the Korean War and was also stationed at Camp Lejeune. Over the years, he has battled and continues to battle multiple cancers, some possibly linked to his time there. Despite those challenges, he remains determined and focused in his fight.

A few days after Veterans’ Day, his children reflected on how deeply the military shaped their father’s life. Wanting to understand just how strong that commitment was, they asked him if, knowing what he knows now, he would still enlist in the Marines if he could go back in time. His response was immediate and clear: absolutely yes. That answer made it clear just how central service has always been to who he is.

Inspired, his children thought it would be meaningful to have fellow veterans stop by to honor him. Around that same time, they noticed an online posting connected to the Charlotte County Veterans Council, hosted by Emily Lewis. They reached out, and Lewis connected them with Jay Hemmingway of American Legion Post 110. Within hours, Hemmingway returned the call, and plans were set in motion. Within days, more than 60 veterans from across the area arrived on at the Luce home to ride by, salute Joe, and honor him for his service.

There was not a dry eye around.

Joe was deeply moved by the presence of his fellow veterans, referring to them as his “brothers.” The moment allowed him not only to be honored, but also to honor them in return.

“For them to so eagerly, willingly and quickly come together, our family was astonished and touched. Truly, this is an occasion that we will forever be grateful for.”

Some family members were unable to attend in person because they live in other states, but through FaceTime they were able to witness the honor ride virtually. Alicia later sent personalized thank you messages to each individual who responded so quickly and generously, as well as to the Post members who rode in solidarity.

Many thanks to all who participated in the Sergeant Joseph J. Luce Honor Ride on November 15, 2025, including the Charlotte County Veterans Council; CCVC; Ms. Emily Lewis, Aftercare Coordinator for the SSG Fox Suicide Prevention Grant Program serving Charlotte and Lee Counties; Legion Post 103 Riders; Veterans Chapter 1037; American Legion Post 110; American Legion Rotonda West Post 113; and Patriot Riders of America.
