The Englewood Moose Lodge topped the Gold division with a combination of great defense, strong pitching and a power hitting offense that at one point won 11 consecutive games enroute to an overall 16-5 record. “It was a tight race this year, and we certainly needed some luck along the way with a couple other teams in it right ‘til the end. But despite some key injuries we were able to pull it out with key wins at the wire,” said Mike Vaught, manager of the Englewood Moose. The Gold division power hitters belted a league record 61 home runs led by the Latin Quarter’s Todd Widrick’s 14 dingers.
Libee’s Sports Bar & Grill was loose and confident all season, coming from behind in the 7th inning of 8 different games to steal victory from their opponents. The ability to win games in the last inning was the reason they were able to win the Silver division. Manager Jim DeBoer said, “We never gave up in any game no matter the score!”
The Bronze division consisted of four teams who were very equal but in the end the championship came down to a one game winner-take-all with the Relics edging the Classics 20 to 19. League Coordinator Greg Brezicki boasts that the Bronze League is mostly a fun league, as he said “The players are here for the fun of it as well as the social aspects. We are men at the end of our playing days who still love the game, have some skills left and want the opportunity to play and have fun doing it, and for some guys it becomes the best thing that they have done the whole week.”
Ken & Barb’s won the end of season Gold Tournament while the Designer Tees won the Silver. Both teams were a threat to win it all in their respective divisions. The banquet was held at Artur’s and the 150 tickets were sold out well before the banquet! League Commissioner Scott Maresh noted the many positive changes the league made in the last year, including AED devices at every field, batter’s box mats, website enhancements and storage boxes at the fields. The league has attracted some of the best players in Florida to their top division.
