County Launches School Zone Speed Camera Program This Fall
To improve student safety, Charlotte County is partnering with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office and Charlotte County Public Schools to launch a new school zone speed enforcement system ahead of the 2025–26 academic year. The County Commission has approved a contract with a vendor to install speed detection safety cameras on designated roads and in school zones. The cameras will operate 30 minutes before school opens and 30 minutes after school closes, ensuring safer travel times for nearly 17,000 students attending the district’s 24 schools, centers, and technical college. Unlike traditional enforcement, the system does not require deputies to stop vehicles, reducing the risk to students walking, biking, or skating near schools. Instead, violation notices will be mailed to the registered vehicle owner and can be paid online. The program is funded by the fines collected from violators. As summer travel picks up, motorists are encouraged to familiarize themselves with local school zones, all of which are clearly marked with signage. Additional reminders will be issued as the new school year approaches. Charlotte County remains committed to making roads safer—especially for the youngest members of our community. For more information, visit CharlotteCountyFL.gov.

Sarasota County homeowners affected by recent hurricanes are encouraged to apply for the Resilient SRQ Housing Recovery Program, which offers financial assistance for home repairs, reconstruction, or reimbursement of eligible out-of-pocket expenses. Backed by more than $411 million in federal funding through HUD’s Community Development Block Grant–Disaster Recovery Program, Resilient SRQ initially launched in June 2024 to assist Hurricane Ian survivors. It now includes homeowners impacted by Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton, with a proposed expansion of $33.3 million to serve those additional needs. Eligibility Requirements include: own and have lived in the storm-damaged home at the time of the disaster, use the property as your primary residence, have a household income at or below 120% of Sarasota County’s AMI, be current on mortgage payments or on an approved payment plan. Volunteers Sought for Sales Tax Focus Group
The Charlotte County Commission is seeking volunteers to serve on the 1% Local Option Sales Tax Focus Group that will hold a series of meetings to review and prioritize projects to be funded by revenue generated by the 1% local option sales tax if approved by voters in November 2026. The focus group’s recommendations will be provided to the County Commission, which votes on the final project list. To request an application, contact Administration at 941•743•1943.

Sea Turtle Nesting Season
Sea turtle nesting season runs from now through October 31 in Charlotte County. Each year, loggerhead, green, and a few Kemp’s Ridley sea turtles come to our beaches to lay their eggs. Stakes, flagging and signs marking the nest location can be seen up and down the shoreline. Charlotte County Parks and Natural Resources advises beach patrons to give the nests some space when setting up on the beach, fill in any holes and knock down sandcastles when you leave. If you’re on the beach at night, do not use flashlights or cell phone lights as they can deter nesting or confuse hatchlings returning to the water. For information, contact Alexandria Grant, Environmental Specialist at 941•613•3218 or Alexandria.Grant@charlottecountyfl.gov.
