Ham Radio Enthusiasts Gear Up for 2025 Field Day in Port Charlotte

The Englewood Amateur Radio Society will join thousands of radio operators across North America for the 2025 Amateur Radio Field Day on Saturday, June 28, at the South Gulf Cove HOA clubhouse, 14859 Ingraham Blvd., Port Charlotte.

Field Day, held annually since 1933, is the largest and most popular event in amateur radio, drawing over 31,000 licensed hams who demonstrate their capabilities by setting up temporary radio stations in public spaces. The event begins at noon and is free and open to the public.

The goal of Field Day is to showcase amateur radio’s role in emergency preparedness, public service, and communication skill development. Participants set up equipment using alternative power sources, such as generators or solar panels, and practice transmitting under simulated emergency conditions.

“This is ham radio’s open house,” said a representative from the Englewood Amateur Radio Society. “We encourage the community to stop by, ask questions, and even get on the air.”

In addition to providing communication in times of crisis, ham radio offers hobbyists a unique way to connect with others worldwide using voice, Morse code, and digital signals.

A highlight from last year’s event included local operator Steve Bishop (KM4GX) broadcasting live from the field, showcasing real-time emergency communication setup.

Visitors of all ages are invited to learn about the science, service, and camaraderie behind this time-honored tradition.
