After Years of Helping Neighbors, Community Fridge Now Under Warning

Cape Coral Community Fridge faces code warning; owner wants answers.

For years now, Dionne Lopez has run a community fridge outside Lee County Plumbing and Supply on Southeast 47th Terrace. It’s simple: neighbors drop off food, clothes, or whatever people might need, and anyone can come by and take what helps them. No questions asked. Dionne says it started five or six years ago when she noticed more residents in the area struggling to get by, especially for food.

Local businesses and neighbors pitch in, donating groceries, meals, and even leftovers. The fridge has become a small lifeline for the community. But this week, things got complicated. Dionne found code enforcement notices taped to her door. The city’s now giving her five days to fix several violations or risk a $150 fine.

The list? Garbage and litter near the dumpster, outdoor storage that isn’t properly screened, appliances kept outside, and a stretch of barbed wire fencing behind the building. Dionne’s frustrated. No one’s clearly explained what she’s supposed to change.

She points out that the barbed wire has been there for approximately 44 years, long before she owned the business.

Neighbors don’t want to lose the fridge. Cape Coral residents know many people count on this generous help.

The city, for its part, says this is about property maintenance, not shutting down the community effort. In a statement, Cape Coral officials said their warning covers outdoor storage, litter, debris, and barbed wire, none of which are allowed under city code. They insist the goal isn’t to stop people from helping each other, but to keep properties safe, clean, and up to code. The city and the Community Redevelopment Agency say they’ll keep working with property owners to bring sites into compliance.

The city has not clarified whether the fridge violates any rules or if authorities will permit it to remain once they fix the other problems.

However, there has been an update reported by Cape Coral Community Fridge as of March 11, 2026.

A few city officials dropped by to discuss repair options. As they navigate this issue, they are still taking donations, and keeping the community updated.

The groups asks that anyone interested in supporting this worthy cause attend the city council meeting on March 25th at 4 p.m. at City Hall. Your support matters.

The mayor did stop by and toured the community fridge and talked with the organization about some options.

“We really appreciate his coming out to see things firsthand. He promised to follow up, and we’re feeling hopeful that we can figure something out together,” said statement on social media. “We want to take a moment to thank the incredible support behind the community fridge. The number of people who have spoken up, shared the story, donated food, and stood behind the idea of neighbors helping neighbors has been overwhelming in the best way.

This fridge was created out of kindness and community care, and the response over the last few days has shown just how many people believe in that same mission.

We truly appreciate everyone who has taken the time to support, encourage, and advocate for keeping food accessible to those who need it.
