Lee County Passes Amended Boca Grande Parking Ordinance

Lee County Commissioners unanimously passed a revised parking ordinance for Boca Grande on Tuesday, enacting new restrictions designed to manage growth while preserving public access to the island’s beaches.

Dubbed the Gasprilla Island Parking Ordinance, the measure passed with several key amendments, including a change to extend downtown parking limits from two to three hours. Because the amendments stayed within the bounds of the originally advertised proposal, the ordinance did not need to be re-advertised for future consideration.

Supporters described the ordinance as a balanced approach to growth and preservation. “We’re trying to protect the soul of the island while still allowing public access,” said Carlos Rodriguez, a Boca Grande resident. “This is about managing growth responsibly.”

Opponents warned of reduced beach access, lost tourism dollars, and a potential $10 million cut to federal beach renourishment funding. “You’re cutting off the lifeline for local businesses and families who’ve fished these waters for generations,” said Jeff Landra.

Equity and historical context also played into the debate. “This ordinance echoes the island’s segregated past,” said Robert Levine. “We must not repeat it by making access exclusive to the wealthy.”

In response to these concerns, commissioners agreed to explore additional actions such as evaluating pay-to-park systems and clarifying tax impacts tied to parking reductions on Gasparilla Island.

Though passed without opposition, board members stressed that the ordinance could still be modified. “Nothing here is carved in stone,” one commissioner said. “We’re willing to adapt as needed to do right by all stakeholders.”

The ordinance marks a significant step in Lee County’s efforts to balance development, environmental preservation, and equitable beach access on one of Florida’s most iconic barrier islands.
