Kayak Launches in Southwest Florida

Southwest Florida, particularly Lemon Bay and Charlotte Harbor, is a prime destination for kayak anglers and paddlers. The region’s sheltered bays and backwaters offer a variety of habitats to explore and fish. However, not all kayak launches provide the same experience. Based on our regular outings and consideration of wind and tides, we have identified a few preferred launch sites.

Kayaking Lemon Bay: Seasonal Strategies

In winter, prevailing northern winds can make kayaking on Lemon Bay challenging. During this season, we focus on the protected bays and inlets along the east side of Lemon Bay. Our top launch spot in winter is Oyster Creek near Lemon Bay High School. From this launch, it is a short paddle to Lemon Bay and the oyster bars to the north near Cedar Point Environmental Park. When winds become a concern, we paddle up the creek to target mangrove shorelines and docks. The main target species in this area are redfish around the oyster bars and trout on the deeper grass flats toward the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW). On calm, windless days, it is possible to make the 1.1 mile crossing to Stump Pass, but caution should be exercised when crossing the ICW.

Lemon Bay Park Launch for Easterly Winds

When winds come from the east, launching at Lemon Bay Park is highly recommended. A sandbar and canal entrance just south of the launch offer productive spots for trout, snook, redfish, and pompano. About half a mile north of the launch, two mangrove and oyster islands provide an ideal location for a lunch break. These islands and surrounding bars are frequented by gamefish targeting bait moving through the area. A wadable sandbar extends westward toward the ICW, making it a fantastic location for fly fishing, especially when schools of mackerel or jacks are present.

Blind Pass Launches and Summer Conditions

During the warmer months, afternoon sea breezes typically make the western shore of Lemon Bay the sheltered side. There are two kayak launches at Blind Pass on the bay side. Whether launching from the northern or southern spot, paddlers can access protected mangrove shorelines, especially with a sea breeze. We often choose the southern launch, fishing the protected bay before heading toward the ICW. The shallow flats between the launches and the ICW are excellent for targeting trout, even without a kayak. The boat dock channel and the dock itself offer shelter when northern winds intensify, and we have experienced success catching snook directly from the dock.

Gasparilla Island Launches

Access to kayak launches on Gasparilla Island has become more limited due to new parking restrictions at the 19th Street launch in Lee County, previously one of our favorites. Further north, the Boca Grande Fishing Pier in Charlotte County remains unaffected by these restrictions and provides a great alternative. This pier launch places anglers on Gasparilla Sound near the old railroad trestle and just east of a large sandbar—both excellent fishing spots. The proximity to Gasparilla Pass results in strong tidal flows, making it a top location for kayak anglers. In winter, the trestles and docks near the pass are populated with sheepshead. South along the shoreline, docks in Peekins Cove offer wind protection when the afternoon sea breeze develops. The sandbar is productive for redfish, while the docks are good for snook and occasionally grouper.
