Warning Period Over: School Zone Cameras Now Enforcing Fines at Nine Charlotte Schools

Warning period over for speeding in school zones.

Charlotte County has switched its school speed zone cameras from issuing warnings to handing out real tickets. Drivers speeding past any of the nine schools with cameras will now face a $100 fine.

If you drive over 10 mph over the posted limit in a school zone, the camera records the violation. Around three days later, the registered owner of the car gets a notice in the mail, including a $100 fine. Before that ticket goes out, a law enforcement officer checks the footage to make sure there’s a violation.

Once you receive a violation notice, you have three choices: pay the fine, send in an affidavit if you qualify for an exception under Florida law (Statute 316.1896(8)), or request a hearing.

Here are the nine schools with speed cameras:
– Lemon Bay High School, Englewood
– Port Charlotte High School
– Port Charlotte Middle School
– L.A. Ainger Middle School, Rotonda West
– Murdock Middle School
– Peace River Elementary
– Neil Armstrong Elementary
– Liberty Elementary
– Deep Creek Elementary, Punta Gorda

School zone cameras only operate on school days. They fire up 30 minutes before the breakfast program arrival, run through the start and end of the school day, and stay on 30 minutes after school lets out. Each school has the schedule posted in its zone.
