CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Dec. 9, 2025) – The Charlotte County Commission has imposed a ban on all outdoor open burning, including the use and discharge of fireworks and sparklers, due to ongoing drought conditions and increased fire risk.
The ban includes yard waste burning, recreational fires, and pile burning for land clearing, as well as the private use and discharge of fireworks, sparklers, or similar incendiary devices. Agricultural and silvicultural controlled burns authorized by the Florida Forest Service are exempt. Commercial and permitted fireworks displays may be allowed on a case-by-case basis with approval from the county fire marshal.
Acting Charlotte County Fire & EMS Chief Matthew McElroy recommended the burn ban, citing the potential for extreme fire behavior resulting from the current drought. The dry conditions increase the likelihood that fires could ignite easily, burn intensely, and spread rapidly.
While the burn ban is in effect, outdoor grilling is still allowed if it is done safely, using a contained grill on a non-flammable surface and kept clear of dry vegetation or combustible materials.
If you feel you are in danger due to fire conditions, call 9-1-1. For non-emergency situations or to report concerns, call the Charlotte County non-emergency line at 941-639-0013.
The burn ban will remain in effect until the Charlotte County Commission votes to lift it.
