Hermitage to present panel on living and dying with dignity

SARASOTA — The Hermitage Artist Retreat will present On Living and Dying with Dignity, a public conversation exploring ethics, medical care and women’s experiences with aging and end-of-life decisions, on Wednesday, January 14, at 3 p.m. at the Asolo Repertory Theatre Koski Center, Weiler Rehearsal Hall, 1009 Tallevast Road, Sarasota.

The program is free with a $5 per person registration fee.

The discussion will feature Deepa Purohit, the 2024 Hermitage Greenfield Prize winner, whose Hermitage-commissioned play Mxx: The Dignity Project examines how women live, age and die within a medical system largely focused on preserving and prolonging life. The panel will also include Dr. Robin Devan, who leads Sarasota Memorial Health Care System’s Palliative Care Services, and TJ Tremaine, bioethics program coordinator for Sarasota Memorial Health Care System.

Hermitage Artistic Director and CEO Andy Sandberg will moderate the conversation, which is presented in collaboration with the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Foundation and Asolo Repertory Theatre.

The cross-disciplinary panel will explore medical intervention across a woman’s lifespan and how ethics and dignity shape decisions about care. The event serves as a prelude to the spring premiere of Purohit’s Hermitage-commissioned play.

Capacity for live events is limited, and early registration is recommended. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own beach or lawn chairs and blankets. Upon registering, audience members will be added to the Hermitage mailing list.

Hermitage programs are supported in part by Sarasota County Tourist Development Tax revenues, the Welles Murphey Fund at Gulf Coast Community Foundation, the Charles and Margery Barancik Foundation, and the Community Foundation of Sarasota County.
