Preview of ‘All Is Calm’ Brings Music and Reflection at Sarasota National

A preview performance of All is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 brought music and reflection to Patriot Plaza at Sarasota National Cemetery on Saturday, December 20, offering a reminder of shared humanity during one of history’s most difficult conflicts.

The gathering featured selections from the acclaimed choral production that recounts the true story of World War I soldiers who paused fighting on Christmas Eve in 1914 to sing together across enemy lines. The event took place in a setting dedicated to honoring military service, adding resonance to the story of temporary peace amid war.

The preview was presented through a collaboration between The Patterson Foundation and Asolo Repertory Theatre, with support from community partners including the Arts and Cultural Alliance of Sarasota County. Attendees heard music and spoken accounts drawn from letters and diaries of soldiers who experienced the truce more than a century ago.

Arts and Cultural Alliance Chief Executive Officer Brian Hersh said hearing the music at Patriot Plaza was especially powerful. “Hearing the music from All is Calm at Patriot Plaza gave me goosebumps more times than I could count,” Hersh said. “It was moving to share that experience with so many people in such a special place.”

Organizers said the performance highlighted the role of the arts in encouraging reflection, compassion and connection, particularly in spaces that honor sacrifice and service. Community leaders, partners and residents attended the event, underscoring broad support for cultural programming that connects history with present-day meaning.
