Registration Open for 20th Annual Sustainable Communities Workshop

Registration is now open for the 20th Annual Sustainable Communities Workshop, set for November 6 at the Harvest House Learning Enrichment Campus in Sarasota.

Themed “Then, Now, Next: 20 Years of Sustainable Communities,” the day-long public event will reflect on two decades of progress while exploring today’s challenges and future strategies for resilient, thriving communities. Topics will range from local history and resilient architecture to climate communication, sustainable business practices, and community health.

The workshop comes as Sarasota County continues to balance rapid growth with the need to preserve natural resources and foster sustainable practices. Designed to connect experts, community leaders, and residents, the program provides practical tools and strategies to help attendees contribute to long-term environmental and economic resilience.

Keynote speakers include Emily Raboteau, author and professor at the City College of New York, who will examine how climate change and community resilience intersect with culture and artistic expression. Additional presentations will be delivered by Don Hall of Transition Network and John McCarthy of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, addressing transition planning and regional history.

The event offers both in-person and online attendance options. Tickets range from $20 to $55 ($5 to $30 for students), with in-person registration including breakfast and lunch. Early-bird pricing of $45 is available through Sept. 26, but on-site capacity is limited to 250 participants. Organizers encourage early registration to secure a spot.

Following the workshop, attendees will be invited to a celebratory social hour featuring live music and an awards ceremony honoring local sustainability champions.

Now in its 20th year, the Sustainable Communities Workshop continues to provide residents with the knowledge and resources needed to promote environmental stewardship, strengthen community resilience, and support a prosperous future for Sarasota County.
