Sarasota paramedics now equipped with handheld ultrasounds

The Sarasota County Fire Department has introduced handheld Point of Care Ultrasounds into service, giving paramedics access to lifesaving imaging in the field.

The Butterfly iQ3 ultrasound system connects probes to a tablet or smartphone, allowing paramedics to capture images and share them in real-time with EMS medical directors through live telemedicine consultations.

“This technology gives our paramedics another tool to identify critical conditions quickly and consult with physicians immediately,” the department said in a statement.

Paramedics received specialized training from the medical director’s office to perform exams that can help detect a collapsed lung, heart injuries, or internal bleeding from trauma. The ultrasound units are carried on EMS Captains’ vehicles positioned in north, central and south county, where they can respond rapidly with advanced medical interventions.

The devices, purchased with a grant from the state of Florida, complement Sarasota County Fire Department’s whole blood program that began saving lives in February. Officials say the addition aligns the department with leading emergency medical practices and is expected to increase survival rates in critical situations.
