Sarasota County Schools Superintendent Terry Connor got to trade places with Venice High School’s Director of Bands, David Wing, to get a firsthand look at the school’s celebrated music program. In an October 10 post, the district announced Connor experienced everything from early-morning rehearsals to the excitement of a Friday night football game performance, aiming to understand the rhythm, rigor, and teamwork involved.
When asked what the director wanted Mr. Connor to take away from the experience, Mr. Wing said, “I think the biggest thing I want you to take away… is the amount of complexity that the students have to accomplish.”
The initiative shines a spotlight on the award-winning Venice High band and its role in building student skill, confidence, and community. By participating directly, the superintendent saw how the demanding program prepares students for success both on and off the field. The Sarasota County Schools Facebook page is sharing the experience via their “Trading Spaces” video series to highlight the value of arts education within the district.
