It’s a terrifying experience: driving with the flow of traffic on I-75 when a super-speeder flies by, exceeding 100 mph.

Super-speeders are popping up more often these days, and they’re putting everyone at greater risk.

What exactly is a super-speeder violation? You can get hit with this charge if you do one of two things: either drive 50 miles per hour or more above the posted limit or go 100 miles per hour or faster in a way that endangers people or property or blocks other drivers.

On September 1, 2026, the Florida Highway Patrol arrested Joshua Gillen on I-75 near mile marker 152 in Punta Gorda. Officers say he drove over 100 mph, threatened people and property, and faced additional charges for having less than 20 grams of marijuana and possessing drug paraphernalia.

Gillen’s name isn’t new to law enforcement. Back in May 2026, police arrested him after they say he ran from troopers during a traffic stop in Lehigh Acres.

Joshua Gillen previous arrest in May 2026

According to FHP, troopers tried to pull over a speeding Hyundai Genesis on State Road 82 at Sunshine Boulevard. Instead of stopping, the driver veered off the road and sped west along a canal between Gifford Avenue North and Navajo Avenue.

The driver, later identified as 18-year-old Joshua Gillen, ditched the car and headed south on foot. Troopers caught the passenger and got a description of Gillen before he slipped away.

Police worked with Lee County deputies and went to the car owner’s house. They found Gillen inside and took him into custody. Police charged him with fleeing and eluding police, reckless driving, and resisting arrest without violence.

Florida’s Super Speeder law, spelled out in the 2026 Florida Statutes, ramps up the consequences for extreme speeding. What used to be a standard ticket is now a criminal offense if you cross these lines. This tougher law started on July 1, 2025.

For a first offense, you face strict penalties. You must show up in court; paying a fine online or by mail isn’t an option. The fine can reach $500, and you could spend up to 30 days behind bars.

Get convicted a second time within five years, and things get even harsher. Fines jump to $1,000. Jail time stretches up to 90 days. Plus, you could lose your license for anywhere from six months to a full year.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers tracked down a man wanted for homicide Wednesday afternoon, July 22, 2026, in a tense standoff that shut down part of I-75 near Fort Myers. It all unfolded around 12:30 p.m., when troopers got a “Be On The Lookout” or BOLO alert for a suspect linked to a homicide in St. Petersburg and considered suicidal.

When troopers spotted him driving in Lee County, they tried to pull him over. He took off. A few miles later, near the southbound Alico Road exit, police forced his truck to a stop with a PIT maneuver. The chase ended, but the standoff began. The man refused commands to come out and barricaded himself inside his vehicle.

Both troopers and Lee County Sheriff’s deputies responded, surrounding the truck. The standoff grew tense; videos posted online clearly captured gunfire, and photos showed the suspect’s truck riddled with bullet holes across the windshield. Police vehicles boxed him in.

Florida Highway Patrol

Eventually, troopers arrested the suspect. He left the scene with serious injuries and went straight to the hospital. No law enforcement officers suffered injuries. State police haven’t said exactly who fired first or how the gunfire started, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is now handling the investigation into the use of force.

Officers blocked off the highway, backing up traffic for hours. In the official statement, Dave Kerner, executive director of FLHSMV, thanked troopers and Lee County deputies for their bravery. “State troopers and law enforcement officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect the people of this state,” he said. With the investigation ongoing, authorities aren’t offering further details for now, but Kerner made it clear he’s grateful for the officers’ courage during a dangerous afternoon on I-75.

Operation Southern Slow Down is back, and Florida’s not going it alone. For a week in July, the 13th through the 18th, law enforcement teams from Florida, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee will work together to rein in speeding and aggressive driving. They’re teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to make the roads safer, especially during summer’s risky stretch.

The summer between Memorial Day and Labor Day isn’t just any hundred days; it’s the most dangerous on the calendar for teen drivers. Every year, studies from AAA and The Florida Safe Teen Driving Coalition show teen-involved fatal crashes spike during these months. More traffic, more teens on the road, and more risk.

To keep everyone safe, NHTSA shares 6 reminders:

1. If you double your speed, your stopping distance doesn’t just double—it quadruples.

2. Big vehicles need more room to stop, especially on hills, wet or rough roads.

3. Hit the brakes before you reach a curve.

4. Teens are watching, so drive the speed limit and set the standard.

5. Let tailgaters pass; don’t race them.

6. And seat belts? Always buckle up.

Simple steps, but they make a difference, especially when the stakes are highest.

Englewood locals know all too well how risky it is to drive on I-75. Just last week, two major accidents shut down the interstate in the early hours, right around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. One crash sparked a brushfire; the other took a life. Both shut down I-75 for hours.

But it’s not just I-75. Florida has a bigger problem. According to a new report by the Allen Law Firm in Gainesville, eight out of the ten deadliest highways, particularly for motorcyclists in the entire country, cut through Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol pins it on two things: heavy traffic and pleasant weather that lets bikes hit the road year-round.

The numbers tell one story, but if you ask riders, you hear another layer. They say people love to blame speed for motorcycle crashes, but that’s not the complete picture. Some accidents involve a rider going off the road alone. The bigger threat? Other drivers. They don’t see motorcycles. Sometimes it’s the blind spot. Sometimes it’s a careless lane change or sideswipe.

Helmet laws play a part too. In Florida, riders 21 and older don’t legally have to wear one. That increases the stakes when crashes happen.

The Allen Law firm’s report details the most dangerous highways, and ultimately, it shows that driving in Florida is a risky bet. Statewide crash data shows thousands of motorcycle wrecks every year. The principal causes are heavy traffic, other drivers not paying attention, and the endless riding season. That combination keeps Florida at the top of lists for all the wrong reasons.

Florida sees about 57.4 motorcycle fatalities for every 10,000 registered bikes, and that high number points to major problems with driver visibility and the hazards riders face at intersections.

The study draws on NHTSA data and shows just how risky Florida roads are for motorcyclists and all vehicles; eight out of the ten deadliest highways in the country cut through the state. I-95 and U.S. 1 stand out as especially dangerous. For a listing of national traffic data analyses, including reports that rank I-75 as one of the top 5 deadliest highways in the country, averaging over 13 fatalities per 100 miles, check out this study from The Zebra.

Early Tuesday morning, June 2, 2026, on I-75 in Charlotte County, a 26-year-old Land O’ Lakes man crashed his Toyota Corolla into a semi-truck, setting off a blaze that burned both his car and about a quarter acre of roadside brush. The crash happened around 4:46 a.m., just south of Tucker’s Grade, with the Florida Highway Patrol reporting that the Corolla’s driver, heading north in the right lane, veered left into the center lane. That’s when the front of his car struck the back trailer of a Volvo semi, driven by a 54-year-old Tampa man.

After the impact, the Toyota spun off the highway, crashed into the woods, and caught fire. The driver suffered only minor injuries and went to a local hospital for treatment. Fortunately, the semi-truck driver wasn’t hurt.

Firefighters arrived to find the car ablaze, flames spreading into nearby vegetation. Crews put out both the vehicle fire and the brush fire, which burned roughly a quarter acre. Charlotte County Fire & EMS dispatched Engine 7, Engine 6, Tanker 6, Rescue 32, and Battalion 1. EMS checked one person but refused hospital transport.

FHP continues to investigate the crash. The fire crews confirmed the brush fire started because of the accident.

Troopers and deputies across Southwest Florida are cracking down hard on “super-speeders.” Since July, when the new Dangerous Excessive Speeding Law kicked in, officers have been slapping cuffs on drivers caught racing down the highways at terrifying speeds.

This new law, in effect since July 1, gives police a lot more power. Now, if someone’s flying over 50 mph over the speed limit or hitting triple digits, officers can pull them over and, if they choose, arrest them on the spot. Florida Highway Patrol can stop that vehicle and has the discretion of putting handcuffs on that person, sending a powerful message of zero-tolerance.

Since the law took effect, state troopers have arrested at least 122 drivers under the new rules. That number doesn’t even count the busts made by local sheriff’s deputies and city police. Jail time and car impoundment are on the table.

The numbers behind the crackdown are sobering. Florida loses around 3,200 people a year on its roads. Every day, nine people die in crashes. In Southwest Florida alone, 182 people died in nearly 21,000 wrecks last year.

Speeding has always been a thorn in Florida’s side, but “super-speeding” raises the stakes. Blow a tire at 100 mph, or lose control for a moment, and the consequences can be catastrophic. The law doesn’t just target reckless drivers with jail—there are points on your license, too. Get caught driving 50 mph over the limit, and you’re looking at four points, the same penalty as blowing past a stopped school bus. Rack up enough points and you’re off the road: 12 points in a year means a 30-day suspension, 18 points in 18 months gets you three months, and 24 points in three years earns a year-long suspension. Fatal reckless driving tacks on at least three more points.

Local law enforcement agencies are posting their own arrest numbers. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrested at least 31 drivers under the new law by early December. Cape Coral Police picked up at least eight, Fort Myers Police two, and Sanibel Police one—an 87-mph motorcyclist blazing down a 35-mph road. In Collier County, deputies made 36 arrests, with October alone seeing 10 people taken in. Marco Island Police had one arrest in December.

And the crackdown keeps picking up speed. By late October, troopers in Lee and Collier counties had made 83 super-speeder arrests. By early December, that jumped to 158—almost one a day. Troop F, which covers a sizable chunk of Southwest Florida, hands out thousands of dangerous driving citations every year.

Law enforcement agencies are hoping this sends a wake-up call with the goal of preventing the loss of innocent lives because of reckless speeding.
