Deadly Toll: Florida Claims Eight of America’s Ten Most Dangerous Highways

Driving in Florida can be a risky bet.

Englewood locals know all too well how risky it is to drive on I-75. Just last week, two major accidents shut down the interstate in the early hours, right around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026. One crash sparked a brushfire; the other took a life. Both shut down I-75 for hours.

But it’s not just I-75. Florida has a bigger problem. According to a new report by the Allen Law Firm in Gainesville, eight out of the ten deadliest highways, particularly for motorcyclists in the entire country, cut through Florida. The Florida Highway Patrol pins it on two things: heavy traffic and pleasant weather that lets bikes hit the road year-round.

The numbers tell one story, but if you ask riders, you hear another layer. They say people love to blame speed for motorcycle crashes, but that’s not the complete picture. Some accidents involve a rider going off the road alone. The bigger threat? Other drivers. They don’t see motorcycles. Sometimes it’s the blind spot. Sometimes it’s a careless lane change or sideswipe.

Helmet laws play a part too. In Florida, riders 21 and older don’t legally have to wear one. That increases the stakes when crashes happen.

The Allen Law firm’s report details the most dangerous highways, and ultimately, it shows that driving in Florida is a risky bet. Statewide crash data shows thousands of motorcycle wrecks every year. The principal causes are heavy traffic, other drivers not paying attention, and the endless riding season. That combination keeps Florida at the top of lists for all the wrong reasons.

Florida sees about 57.4 motorcycle fatalities for every 10,000 registered bikes, and that high number points to major problems with driver visibility and the hazards riders face at intersections.

The study draws on NHTSA data and shows just how risky Florida roads are for motorcyclists and all vehicles; eight out of the ten deadliest highways in the country cut through the state. I-95 and U.S. 1 stand out as especially dangerous. For a listing of national traffic data analyses, including reports that rank I-75 as one of the top 5 deadliest highways in the country, averaging over 13 fatalities per 100 miles, check out this study from The Zebra.
