The Heart of Englewood Comes Home: Community Rallies to Give Lifelong Wildlife Protector His Final Peaceful Rest

Riley and Louie Pierson

Back in July 2026, the Englewood REVIEW shared a story about Louie Pierson, a man who spent decades looking out for wild animals that ended up hurt or stranded with nowhere to go.

Louie didn’t just build a name for himself. Over 25 years, he created an entire community around kindness and action, where helping wasn’t just a good idea, but the only way to live.

Louie Pierson, doing what he loved.

When Louie landed in hospice care in West Virginia, his daughter Riley Lawrence took it upon herself to bring him home. She wanted her dad’s final days to unfold in Englewood, where mangroves, sand, and water shaped his entire life.

It wasn’t easy. Riley faced a maze of challenges, but the Englewood community rushed in to help. People gave what they could through Louie’s GoFundMe, making it possible for Riley to get him back to Florida. You could feel the outpouring of support.

Some people might not know Louie’s story. It’s not just about one person, or just about animals. It’s about relentless dedication, a kind most people wouldn’t sign up for.

Over the years, if someone in Englewood found an owl dazed in the road or a manatee stuck in the weeds, everyone knew to call Louie. Even before the days of social media, word spread because Louie started the Amber Lake Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center from scratch.

That’s just who Louie was.

There’s a story from years ago about Louie driving along Manasota Beach Road, seeing a hawk hit by a car, scooping it up, and taking it home without thinking twice. Growing up on a farm in West Virginia made him tough; he wasn’t afraid of much. He started rescuing animals because he saw a need and just figured it out as he went. The calls kept coming, and it became his life’s work.

We received an update from Riley:

“I wanted to reach out and thank you again for the article you wrote about my dad and for helping get his story out into the Englewood community.

“I truly believe the attention and support your article helped generate played a part in making it possible for me to get him home to Florida, and I will always be grateful for that.

“I also wanted to make sure you had heard that, unfortunately, my dad passed away on Saturday, August 29, after developing a sudden and serious infection.

“We had worked so hard to get him back here, and I really thought we would have more time once we did. But I’m incredibly thankful that we were able to make it happen. He got to be back in Florida, closer to me and his grandson, and we had a few precious moments together that I will always hold onto.

“Your willingness to share his story helped people understand who he was, what he meant to Englewood, and why getting him back here mattered so much. I don’t think I can fully express how much that meant to me.

“Thank you for helping me bring my dad home.”

Thank you, Louie, for teaching us that helping isn’t just a good idea, it’s the only way to live. Please join us in sending love and prayers to Riley and the Pierson family. Rest in peace, wildlife hero.
