CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — UF/IFAS Extension Charlotte County will offer two gardening workshops on Saturday, January 24 at Centennial Park Recreation Center, 1120 Centennial Blvd., Port Charlotte, including a morning class focused on backyard vegetable gardening and afternoon sessions on hydroponic lettuce production.
The Vegetable Gardening in Southwest Florida Workshop is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon. Organizers said the three-hour program will cover “vegetable gardening, pests, and diseases,” with an emphasis on “practical information that can be put to use immediately in the homeowner’s backyard.” Participants will receive vegetable seedlings to take home. A Hydroponic Gardening Workshop is set for 1 to 2:30 p.m. and again from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Participants will learn how to grow hydroponic lettuce in a non-circulating system using a “simple home-made unit” based on a hydroponic bucket design “perfect for small spaces,” according to organizers. Each participant will take home “a complete kit including seedlings,” and the workshop will provide hands-on instruction taught by Master Gardener Volunteer Bob Prier, described by organizers as “an actual hydroponic practitioner.”
