Amazon has changed how we shop; just a few clicks and, sometimes, your order shows up the same day. Not that long ago, nobody expected shopping to be this easy.
Now, right up the coast in St. Pete, people will be receiving their prescriptions delivered by drone. Picture this: you’re sitting at home, you hear a thud at your door, and there it is, your antibiotics waiting on the welcome mat.
Drones have been grabbing the news lately, and now BayCare in St. Petersburg is joining the conversation. They’re teaming up with Zipline to roll out a new drone delivery program that will send prescription medications straight to people’s homes in the St. Pete area.
This partnership isn’t just about medicine. The service offers on-demand, contactless delivery, focused on safety, privacy, and putting the patient in control. People can expect quicker deliveries of not only prescriptions but also lab samples and other critical supplies, whether it’s moving items between medical facilities or dropping them off at someone’s front door.
Stephanie Conners, BayCare’s president and CEO, explains their motivation simply: “We want to break down barriers, so it’s easier for patients to get what they need.” With these drones, BayCare hopes to deliver faster, more dependable service, giving people extra flexibility and making healthcare more personal, all without having to leave the house.
Here’s how it works: a health provider places an order inside a Zipline Dropbox stationed at a BayCare site. From there, Zipline’s electric drone grabs the package and heads for the delivery address. When it arrives, the drone doesn’t land. Instead, it hovers up to 300 feet in the air while lowering the order in a secure pod tethered to the drone. The system’s design enables continuous delivery, even during harsh weather like strong winds or rain. After dropping off the package, the drone returns to one of two charging stations in Pinellas County, ready for the next trip.
Donna Lynch, vice president of the Laboratory at BayCare, drives the point home: “We want to give our patients and clinicians the best service possible. Zipline lets us create a more connected, efficient delivery network for West Central Florida, so we can really meet people where they are.”
The service is completely optional, as patients decide whether they want to use it. The whole idea is to make it as simple as possible to get the medications and supplies you need, without trekking to the pharmacy or the clinic.
BayCare plans to launch the service in St. Petersburg-Clearwater in late 2027, then expand across the rest of Tampa Bay. They also stress that patient privacy remains protected. Zipline won’t access any personal information and follows all privacy regulations. The drone system only gets what it needs for the delivery: things like the package weight, size, temperature needs, and handling instructions.
