The North Port City Commission plans a public meeting on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. in the Commission Chambers at City Hall. They’re looking at a big decision: whether to put an 18-month freeze on new data center applications.
North Port sits right above Charlotte County, and while Sarasota officials get the final say on any data center project there, residents in Charlotte County can’t just ignore the ripple effects. These projects spark concern: huge water usage, demands on the local power grid, and questions about whether existing zoning makes sense for facilities this size.
Sarasota County already hit the brakes on new hyperscale data centers with a one-year freeze. Now, North Port is weighing its own local policy.
Putting this in context, data centers are driving Florida into the tech spotlight, no longer just quiet, anonymous boxes full of servers. With AI and cloud computing booming, tech giants and utility companies want to build bigger and bigger, especially outside traditional tech hubs like Miami-Dade or Tampa. Florida now ranks as the country’s fourth-largest data center market, hosting over 120 operating sites. Lately, though, the real surge is happening in suburbs and smaller counties like Polk, Palm Beach, Nassau, and Citrus. Utilities like Florida Power & Light and Duke Energy are lining up billions to keep these facilities humming.
But it’s not business as usual. Hyperscale data centers can gulp down electricity on par with a mid-sized city, up to 1,400 megawatts, and pull anywhere from 1 to 5 million gallons of water each day just to keep servers cool.
Local governments, from Lakeland to Nassau County, aren’t just watching. Nineteen jurisdictions have put moratoriums or pause on data center development. Palm Beach County, for instance, recently shot down “Project Tango,” a high-profile AI data center the public feared would put the Everglades at risk. Meanwhile, state lawmakers stepped in too.
In May 2026, Governor Ron DeSantis signed SB 484—a law that blocks utility companies from shifting the cost of data center upgrades onto regular customers’ utility bills.
The Pros and Cons of Data Center Activity
On the pro side, these big tech investments pump money into the local tax base. Counties like Polk are banking on new revenue and short-term surges in construction and engineering jobs. Florida cements itself as a global tech and financial hotspot. And new rules mean companies, not residents, fund infrastructure upgrades.
The cons are hard to ignore. Hyperscale data centers pump water out of the Floridan Aquifer at an alarming rate, threatening both springs and water quality, especially during drought conditions, when saltwater can seep in. They pull huge amounts of electricity, stressing the grid when everyone needs power most, like scorching summer afternoons.
Despite sprawling over hundreds of acres, finished centers often need just a handful of full-time staff, sometimes as few as ten. Residents complain about constant industrial noise, bright floodlights at all hours, and losing green space and quiet countryside to a new wave of industrial development.
