Florida’s Hometown Heroes program is back, and it’s giving frontline workers a real shot at finally buying a home. If you qualify, you could get up to $35,000 for your down payment and closing costs, money that can make all the difference for first-time buyers.
This program targets people who make communities run: healthcare workers, public school employees, first responders, law enforcement, and public safety staff. Court employees and childcare workers also qualify, along with active-duty military, National Guard, Reserve service members, and veterans who meet the employment requirements. If you want in, you need to have a full-time job with a Florida-based employer.
Here’s how the program works: it’s a zero-interest loan, not a grant. You don’t pay it back month to month. The state waits until you sell the house or pay off your first mortgage.
This year, Florida set aside $50 million for the program, but housing experts say it won’t last long. For instance, the Orlando Regional Realtor Association expects people to claim all the money within about 30 days. So, if you want to apply, don’t wait.
To get the money, you need to buy a primary residence in Florida and move in within 60 days after closing. Fully remote workers aren’t eligible, though hybrid employees can still qualify if they’re at a work site three days a week. You should be a first-time buyer, meaning you haven’t owned a primary home in the past three years, unless you’re a veteran or buying in a targeted area. There are income limits by county, your credit score needs to be at least 640, and at least one applicant must complete an approved homebuyer education course before closing. Some military and veteran buyers get exceptions.
