‘When Do We Say Enough?’: Inside a Neighborhood’s Year-Long Battle Against Big Money

Oppose Manasota Beach Road Group

For the past two weeks, we’ve zeroed in on the Oppose Manasota Beach Road Group (OMBR) as they marked their first anniversary. It’s been a turbulent twelve months. They’ve waded through piles of documents, tried to make sense of slippery details, and probably read more than most people without a law degree would ever want.

This is our third and final segment discussing OMBR. Here, you get to feel the genuine worries of the group. They’re anxious about environmental damage. They’re frustrated with traffic snarls and nervous about public safety. But their deeper frustration keeps surfacing: why do the rules always seem to favor those with money? Why must regular people become detectives just to get a straight answer? And the biggest question of all: when do we finally say enough is enough? Where are local politicians while these concerns pile up, seemingly unheard?

Kelly Bauman and the rest of OMBR lay it all bare. They don’t just recount events. They reveal the relentless search for clarity and the steps they took to chase down answers.

Development’s been a constant source of tension in Englewood and across Southwest Florida. Opinions aren’t lacking. Nobody holds back; debates spill out everywhere. Some want change. Others cling to what’s familiar.

OMBR spent the past year working very hard, attending meetings, doing research, organising protests, and handling legal issues. They scored wins; elsewhere, met setbacks. But regardless of the outcome, these neighbors grew close. This is more than activism. It’s a community standing together and refusing to fold under pressure.

On September 28, 2026, one year after their first gathering, they regrouped. The meeting was a mix of laughter, tough truths, and eye-opening revelations. Earlier, in part two, they pushed deeper into the environmental questions that haunt their efforts.

Now, we arrive at part three, the closing chapter of our conversation. The story hasn’t finished yet; the past is prologue, and they’re not ready to let go.
