A boat went up in flames just off the Venice Inlet on Sunday, September 20, 2026, and eventually sank beneath the waves. Police say everyone on board made it out unharmed.
The Venice Police Department sent up a drone to give firefighters a better view, while Fire Boat 51 and the Sarasota County Sheriff’s marine unit rushed to the scene on the water.
According to officers, the boat suffered heavy damage before it disappeared beneath the surface. They haven’t said what started the fire.
Afterward, police took to social media to nudge boaters about safety basics: check your fire extinguishers. Make sure they’re marine-rated, up-to-date, and easy to grab in an emergency. Inspect engines, fuel lines, batteries, and electrical gear before you get underway. Pack a life jacket for each person, test your marine radio, and make sure you can contact help if things go sideways.
No one was hurt this time, but a little preparation goes a long way on the water.
