Sarasota Memorial Hospital has once again landed a spot on Newsweek’s “Best-in-State” hospitals list, standing out as one of the top hospitals in Florida.
This year, Newsweek highlighted 800 hospitals from across the country. Sarasota Memorial’s main campus, SMH-Sarasota, was the only hospital in Southwest Florida to make the 2027 list, placing in the top 10 out of 30 Florida hospitals.
Newsweek put the list together with Statista Inc., ranking hospitals based on several metrics: quality indicators like mortality and patient safety, recommendations from independent professionals, patient experience data from HCAHPS surveys, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMS) and how those outcomes shape real-time care decisions.

David Verinder, CEO of Sarasota Memorial, sees the Newsweek recognition, and the many recent national honors for quality and safety as a direct reflection of the team’s dedication. “What really makes me proud is knowing how much work goes into earning these honors,” Verinder said. “Every day, thousands of our physicians, nurses, and staff pull together to put patients first. That kind of commitment is why our community trusts us and why we keep earning national recognition.”
Recent accolades for Sarasota Memorial in 2026 include: being named one of the nation’s 15 Top Health Systems by Premier Inc./Modern Healthcare, earning multiple “Best Hospital” ratings from U.S. News & World Report, maintaining 5-star ratings from Medicare and Medicaid, keeping an “A” grade for safety from the Leapfrog Group, and a spot on Newsweek’s “World’s Best Hospitals” list.
Newsweek says its rankings give patients a powerful resource to help make informed choices about their health care. “Access to quality care often starts close to home, so local hospitals are vital for community well-being,” Newsweek wrote. “From emergencies to specialized treatment, these hospitals step up—not just with excellent clinical quality and safety, but also by listening to their patients and meeting the unique needs of their area.”
