Englewood’s Buchan’s Bayside project just got the green light for expansion, even though the community remains divided. On Wednesday, Sarasota County commissioners voted unanimously to approve the second phase of redevelopment, setting the stage for a bigger mixed-use project along the waterfront.
This decision means the development stretches from about 2.8 to nearly 3.8 acres. It also bumps the number of planned residential villas up from 12 to 20. The plan keeps the previously approved 10,000-square-foot waterfront restaurant and introduces boat docks.
Not everyone’s happy about this. Supporters showed up at the meeting ready to make their case. They talked about new life on Dearborn Street, more business, steady tourism, and economic growth. Local entrepreneurs say it’s a chance to draw people year-round, not just when there’s pleasant weather.
Opponents packed in too. They worried about what this would do to Dearborn Street’s historic feel. Concerns circled around more cars, tighter parking, and bigger environmental footprints. Some residents asked whether the bigger project even fits with the surrounding community at all.
In the end, commissioners moved the project forward. But it’s not fully home-free, as Buchan’s Bayside still has to clear more development reviews and permitting hoops before construction kicks off. The debate isn’t over, but the expansion is officially underway.
